Upcoming Public Hearings for the Wilmington Riverfront Transportation Infrastructure Project

April 15, 2024

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in collaboration with the City of Wilmington and the Riverfront Development Corporation of Delaware (RDC), cordially invites the community to attend a public hearing concerning the Wilmington Riverfront Transportation Infrastructure Project (formerly known as the South Market Street Redevelopment Project). This gathering aims to inform attendees about the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and to gather their feedback.

The project aims to enhance transportation infrastructure in the South Market Street Riverfront East area, fostering connectivity and providing multi-modal resources. Proposed improvements include replicating the Wilmington street grid, establishing a Riverwalk, creating new pedestrian and cyclist accommodations that integrate with existing pathways, repairing and constructing bulkheads, implementing additional drainage outfalls and tide control valves, and adding two feet of clean fill beneath transportation improvements.

The draft EA comprehensively outlines the socioeconomic, cultural, natural, and other environmental aspects within the project area, detailing anticipated effects and proposing measures to mitigate unavoidable impacts. Interested parties can access the draft EA online at riverfronteastconnect.com and at various in-person viewing locations, including the Neighborhood House, Chase Center on the Riverfront, and MSK Community Center.

Public hearings will be conducted in April to solicit feedback from citizens, elected officials, and stakeholders. The public comment period for the draft EA runs from April 1 to May 1, 2024. Comments can be submitted via the comment form at in-person hearings, the online form at riverfronteastconnect.com, or verbally during the listed public hearings.

Details for the in-person hearing on April 15, 2024, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Chase Center on the Riverfront, as well as the virtual hearing on April 17, 2024, with sessions at 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. (held via Zoom), are provided.
