Congresswoman, Philadelphia tech leaders join virtual event exploring gender equity solutions in the workplace

March 16, 2021

Inaugural Future Works Alliance PHL event to address “shecession” labor crisis disproportionately impacting women across the region & nation

Philadelphia – Greater Philadelphia and the nation are currently facing a “shecession,” a labor crisis disproportionately impacting women. Since February 2020, more than 2.3 million women have left the labor force, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That puts women’s labor force participation at the lowest rate since 1988. Meanwhile, one in four women are considering downshifting their careers or leaving the workforce entirely due to COVID-19, according to a recent McKinsey-Lean In report.

With the pandemic’s potential to erase the gains made for workplace gender equity in recent years, the Future Works Alliance PHL with co-sponsors Chariot Solutions, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Citizen are hosting Women, Work and COVID: The Future is Still Female, a virtual event that will explore pathways employers and policymakers can take to narrow the gender gap, and features a keynote from U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D – Del.), the founder of the Congressional Future of Work Caucus.
