Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be virtual this year and kicks off Tuesday, September 22, 2020. The event will be hosted by Blake Saunders of Wilmington, Delaware.
HBCU Week initiative began in 2017 by Mayor Purzycki with the assistance of Ashley Christopher, at the time she was the City’s HBCU Program Manager.
The mission of HBCU Week is to encourage high-school-aged youth to enroll at HBCUs, to provide scholarship money for students that come from disenfranchised communities, and to sustain a pipeline for employment from undergraduate school to corporate America.
Ashley shared due to the pandemic this year HBCU week Gala has been postponed to June of 2021.
The purpose of the HBCU Gala is to raise money for HBCU Week, assemble HBCU supporters, and honor individuals who have demonstrated a significant commitment to HBCUs and to Wilmington’s HBCU programs.
